The Prospect Of Impeachment

America learned much from the impeachment process against President Richard Nixon and the impeachment of President Bill Clinton.  If Mr. Trump is subpoenaed by Special Counsel Robert Mueller and refuses to honor that subpoena, it reaches the Supreme Court and the Court decides that the subpoena is valid and Mr. Trump still refuses to honor it, then America will experience another learning milestone in presidential politics and law and order.  And with the way that things are going right now with Mr. Trump’s new legal team, that learning experience may come sooner than later.

Former mayor Rudy Giuliani, who was recently added to Mr. Trump’s ever-changing legal team, went on Fox and admitted to Sean Hannity that Mr. Trump was aware of the $130,000 paid to  Ms. Stephanie A. Clifford (a.k.a. Stormy Daniels), before he made the rounds at Fox and possibly put Mr. Trump in even more legal jeopardy than he was already in.  During the press briefing on May 3, members of the press pounded Ms. Sanders with tough questions about what mayor Giuliani had said, questioned the value of Mr. Trump’s word and even questioned whether Ms. Sanders herself had knowingly lied to the American people.

It was also revealed in breaking news recently that Mr. Trump’s lawyer, Michael Cohen’s, telephone had been wiretapped for a period of time prior to the raid on his office by the FBI.  This raid prompted an interesting discussion between Alan Dershowitz and another guest on the May 3 MSNBC show, which was guest-hosted by Steve Kornacki.  It is my opinion that, in essence, Mr. Dershowitz trashed the law enforcement system – as it relates to the wiretap on Mr. Cohen’s phone, was skeptical as to whether officials did not find a crime first and then fit it to the person – in this case Mr. Cohen – in order to secure approval to tap his phone, and then he also stated that he did not trust government or the judges and other law enforcement personnel.  He said that all Americans should be concerned about this.

It is also my opinion that countless numbers of everyday Americans have been surveilled, and many continue to be surveilled currently, via the aforementioned wiretap method and via many other methods.  We reluctantly accept this invasive prying into our lives by our government in the name of national security.  The government says that it is needed in order to protect us and keep us safe.  And when they find something that that everyday American is doing that threatens America and its citizens in any way and are able to prevent that planned act from coming to fruition, they hold it up proudly and say things like, ‘see, this is why we have this program in place.  It protects America and saves countless lives.’

Unfortunately, most Americans have come to realize and accept that things do not work the same way for the rich and powerful in America; the high-level, white-collar folks.  Far too many rich and powerful people, whether they are regular citizens or elected politicians receive special treatment.  Because if they do go to prison, the places where they serve their time and how they serve that time is far different from where that everyday American serves their time and how they serve it.  And this applies especially to politicians.  These are the people that have the potential to do even more damage to America than that everyday American could ever do.  And yet they too often are treated with kid gloves.  That should not be the case!

Further, this should apply especially to Mr. Trump who is the leader of our country.  No one should be above the law!  He is the one who should be leading the effort to assure that all of our laws are enforced…and enforced equally and fairly!  Yet he and members of the Republican-led congress seem to be doing everything within their power to prevent Special Counsel Mueller from doing his job to get to the bottom of this whole thing involving Russia.  Why are they doing this when there is so much evidence that indicates that something went terribly wrong during the 2016 presidential election and is threatening to continue to go wrong in the 2018 elections and beyond?

America is in grave danger and that danger needs to be confronted and addressed.  As American citizens, especially those that are of voting age, it is incumbent upon us to do our part to confront and successfully address that danger.  It is far past time to drop the partisan politics and address this grave threat as patriotic Americans.  We can always get back to the dogma, squabbling, and playing of politics; but we will only be able to do that if we first assure that our democracy continues to exist as we now know it.

So always remember, whether you are a Democrat, Republican or Independent, your vote is the most important one of all…unless you don’t use it!

What’s New With Police Departments And Police Around The Country? Nothing.

Dirty police officers around the country are continuing to kill Black men and the police departments are continuing to do nothing about it.  Their fellow police officers, along with the politicians who are responsible for and supposed to be overseeing these police departments, are afraid to address the problem.  These police officers are afraid to address it because they are afraid that one day they will call for backup and no one will show up until it is too late.  Politicians are afraid to address it because it is a political hot potato and they believe that if they do address it, they might not be reelected.  Statesmanship no longer has any meaning to them; it is just a word and everything else that matters revolves around keeping their job.

In light of the recent shootings and killings of unarmed Black men, this makes the national message that Mr. Trump sent out to police, that if they rough up those whom they arrest a little bit that it is okay, even more disturbing.  In essence he said to police officers, don’t worry about it because they deserve it.  At least with the clean police officers it is easier for us to empathize with them when they fail to address the problem because their lives might be on the line and they want to assure to the greatest extent possible that they return home to their wives and children at the end of each shift.  Still, this is the profession that they have chosen and to serve in it honorably is a part of their job.  As regards the politicians who are supposed to be responsible for protecting us as a country and leading us with honor but have instead chosen to protect their jobs at all cost, there is not even a semblance of an excuse for them; they have neither dignity nor honor left.  They have unfortunately sought out the nearest heap of reprobates and willingly cast themselves upon it.

It is obvious that Mr. Trump’s vision for how America should move forward (backwards?) and what she should become does not align with that of most Americans.  Most Americans – whether they are white, black, brown, yellow or any other color among the melting pot of colors that exist in our country – believe in fairness and equal justice for all.  And although oftentimes we disagree on exactly how evenhanded and fair that America is to all peoples, whether or not there is a problem in that arena and how – if there is a problem – that problem should be addressed, most Americans are caring people.  If we could only somehow rid ourselves of all of the chaos and crap that is swirling around us, take a step back  and look at the beautiful and breathtaking heritage of each culture and embrace that heritage, we could recognize  and accept the beauty involved in each heritage; then that way, we would likely fight a lot less often.  And when we did fight, it would be like fighting with those in our personal families; there would be rules.  What would be wrong with that?  After all, we are family; we are the American family!

Mr. Trump Forges Ahead To Establish And Solidify Trump’s America

The late, great President John F. Kennedy once said; “The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie – deliberate, contrived and dishonest, but the myth, persistent persuasive, and unrealistic.  Belief in myths allows the comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought.”  As Mr. Trump continues to move forward relentlessly through all of the adversity and rightful pounding that he is taking and convince far too many people that he and his campaign were in no way involved with Russia’s meddling in the 2016 election, I could not prevent myself from reflecting on the poem ‘Invictus’ by William Ernest Henley; it follows:

“Out of the night that covers me, black as the pit from pole to pole, I thank whatever gods may be for my unconquerable soul,

In the fell clutch of circumstance I have not winced nor cried aloud.  Under the bludgeonings of chance my head is bloody but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears looms but the horror of the shade, and yet the menace of the years finds, and will find me, unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate, how charged with punishments the scroll, I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul.”

Invoking this poem is not meant in any way, directly or implicitly, to state that I believe that the way that Mr. Trump is comporting himself as the leader of America is honorable or warranted and that he is being treated unfairly by the press and the public.  As a matter of fact, I find his behavior deplorable.  That notwithstanding, over time, famous and infamous people and honorable and dishonorable people have quoted this poem or have quoted portions of it.  Among those people were; Winston Churchill, Nelson Mandela, President Barrack Obama and even American domestic terrorist Timothy McVeigh.

However, what it is meant to state is that Mr. Trump is an extremely tough and determined man who is extremely dangerous and just happens to be the most powerful man in the world!  And since the way that he is conducting himself has obviously gained traction with our Republican led congress and they are blindly supporting him, it is extremely important that all of the American people take notice of what is happening, remain vigilant – and in November, take action to replace Mr. Trump and those elected officials who are supporting him.

Of course, Mr. Trump and his supporters have the right to express their feelings about how they believe America should be run and fight for those beliefs.  But it has been shown via polls many times already that they are in the minority; that their way of thinking is not who Americans are.  To be able to effectively address this problem is only one among many of the reasons why all Americans, especially those who are of voting-age, must get informed, stay informed about politics and vote.  We must be made to realize that all elections, from local level to federal level, are important.  You should determine right now that whether or not you agree with  and support Mr. Trump, you are going to get informed, stay informed and always fulfill your civic responsibility.

America has always been great, is great now, and will continue to be great as long as all of us do our part to assure that those whom we elect to be our leaders will be true statesmen and will uphold their oath to the Constitution and carry out their sworn duty to protect America against all enemies foreign and domestic.  That is not what they are doing now.  Instead, it is as if they have sworn an oath to Mr. Trump and the Republican party rather than to the Constitution.  And we can rest assured that If we refuse to do our part by failing to perform our civic duty, we will inevitably end up in Trump’s America or a mirror image of it just under a different name.

So whether you are a Democrat, Republican or Independent, always remember, your vote is the most important one of all…unless you don’t use it!  Help keep America great; be sure that you get informed, stay informed, and vote from this point forward!

Mr. Trump Continues To Defy Gravity; Nothing Can Bring Him Down…So Far

I continue to be perplexed by how the Republican led congress is addressing the entire Donald J. Trump situation and especially how they are dealing with it as it relates to Russia and the investigation into Russia meddling in America’s 2016 election.  I am mesmerized by the fact that Russia obviously interfered in our election, it was confirmed by all of our intelligence organizations, and yet Mr. Trump and the U.S. congress have done absolutely nothing about it.

Not only that, but they have done absolutely nothing about shoring up our electronic and other defenses to assure that this does not happen again.  Case in point, the State Department was granted $120 million to fight Russian meddling in our elections.  They have spent a total of $0.  Enter Secretary of State Rex Tillerson.  He was recently fired by Mr. Trump via a tweet and will depart on March 31.  He made what arguably could be the best speech of his tenure when he addressed the American people regarding his pending departure.  But this should not cause us to bestow the ‘white knight’ title upon him.  After all, not only has he regularly been complicit with Mr. Trump in his tomfoolery but he is the Secretary of state and is responsible for that big fat ‘$0’ that was spent of that $120 million.

What makes things even more bizarre and captivating is that our congress has witnessed Mr. Trump refuse to say one negative word about Russia and Vladimir Putin, refuse to put the additional sanctions into place that congress passed almost unanimously, seen a number of high-level officials who were a part of Mr. Trump’s campaign admit to lying under oath about their contacts with high-level Russian officials and be indicted for various reasons – some pleading guilty, and watched as time-and-time again Mr. Trump has released trial balloons to determine whether he can get away with firing Special Counsel Robert Mueller.  They have watched Devin Nunes – Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee that was supposed to be conducting a meaningful and bipartisan investigation into Russia meddling in our election, act as an extension of the White House in his efforts to protect Mr. Trump.  To top all of this off, Republican congress members have denigrated the FBI, CIA and other U.S. intelligence organizations all in their effort to protect Mr. Trump.  And finally, the Republicans on the aforementioned House Intelligence Committee recently closed this investigation and wrote a report that, for all intents and purposes, vindicated Mr. Trump and his campaign without even informing the Democrats on the committee.

This is frightening because these are the people that we have elected to represent us and protect the Constitution.  To see them conduct themselves in this way is all but unimaginable.  One would think that with so much evidence that points to the fact that Mr. Trump is selling out our country to Russia, all members of congress would be repulsed and say to Mr. Trump in no uncertain terms and emphatically, no, we will not allow this!  But instead, for whatever reason, Republicans have sold their souls, gotten onboard with him and determined that they are going to ride it out.  These actions by these so called leaders who long ago abandoned the title ‘statesmen’ without doubt, if one can envision it, adds to the scale on the side of the scales of justice that says ‘power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely.’

America, it is incumbent upon all of us to fix this problem and fix it immediately.  We can do that in November and assure that this problem where our own elected officials show no real commitment to protecting our Constitution and defending it against enemies foreign and domestic will be removed from office.  The most efficient and effective way that we can do this is through our vote.  I Challenge all Americans to get informed, stay informed and fulfill your civic responsibility by getting out and voting.  All elections are important; the fact that we are saddled with a Mr. Trump is simply a prime example of where we fell short in a national election.

So whether you are a Democrat, Republican or Independent, always remember, your vote is the most important one of all…unless you don’t use it!  Be sure to vote this November and from that point forward.  I assure you, it is worth the effort!

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell And Rep. Trey Gowdy Are Not White Knights

Mitch McConnell and Trey Gowdy want to ride like white knights into the mess that America now finds itself in and pretend to lead the charge to assure that our democracy will survive the threat from all enemies whether they be foreign or domestic.  Many Americans who do not already know it might be interested in knowing that Majority Leader McConnell and Representative Gowdy played no small part in leading us into the aforementioned mess that we are now in.  So I will mention it for all to read (hear); BOTH OF THESE MEN PLAYED THEIR PART WELL IN LEADING US INTO THIS QUAGMIRE WHEN PRESIDENT OBAMA WAS IN OFFICE.

Leader McConnell played his part by, among many other actions or lack thereof, refusing to hold a vote on President Obama’s nominee to become a Supreme Court Justice long enough for Mr. Donald Trump to become the occupant of the White House, nominate Neil Gorsuch and place him on the bench of the highest court in America.  Representative Gowdy did his part by relentlessly hounding Secretary Hillary Clinton regarding Benghazi and her emails while she was Secretary of State and beyond.

Time-and-time again he never came up with anything but, in the now infamous words of Senate Majority Leader McConnell that he addressed to the senate in his successful effort to prevent Senator Elizabeth Warren from completing her reading of a letter – which was already in the congressional records – from Ms. Coretta Scott King; yet he persisted (I took the liberty to replace the word ‘she’ with ‘he’).  In the event that that you are not familiar with this letter, it was written by Ms. King to oppose then U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Alabama Jeff Sessions’ possible appointment to a federal judgeship.  Senator Warren was reading it to augment her position opposing Mr. Sessions’ potential confirmation to become U.S. Attorney General and to encourage other senators to join her.  Leader McConnell shut her down…  Look where that got us.

Anyway, now that this mess is hitting the fan after a little more than a year of Mr. Trump’s leadership and is splattering all over Republicans in Washington and around the country, Leader McConnell and Representative Gowdy don’t like the way that they and their Republican colleagues smell.  They can no longer stand the stench so they want to swing (or at least pretend to swing) into action again.  They want to be perceived as the grownups in the room who are the badly needed catalyst to break down the endless partisan resistance, which Mitch McConnell helped to lead, and instigate the will of their fellow Republicans to do the right thing, somehow forge partisanship, and restore America’s image domestically and abroad so that the healing process can begin.

Sound like a load of political crap?  It’s hard not to believe that it isn’t exactly that.  After all, the 2018 and 2020 elections are barreling towards us and Leader McConnell surly wants to retain his seat as Majority Leader.  As for Representative Gowdy, even if he keeps his word and does not run for congress again, I get the strong feeling that he would not turn down a seat on the bench as an Appellate Court judge… if someone forced him into it, of course.  However, the question is, can a man with his now sullied reputation be trusted to be fair and adhere to enforcement of the law in a non-partisan way?  Regardless of the answer to this rhetorical question, certainly he and Leader McConnell knew before the mess hit the fan that mess has a repulsive aroma.  Why did they wait so long before riding (pretending to ride?) in?  Go figure.  But this could likely, and rightly, cause many Americans to have a low regard for each man and the horse that he rode in on; likely you get my drift.

As we Americans continue to struggle to get our political bearings I cannot help but continue to reflect daily on how divided we have become and question how much damage Mr. Trump is doing to America through his unorthodox leadership style.  Will we be able to completely recover from this damage and if so, how long will it take?  I still disagree with the Republicans on a lot of things but there was a time when I easily honestly believed that our Democratic and Republican statesmen could have reasonable discourse on the issues and always arrive at a reasonable, even if not amicable, agreement.  I still honestly believe that our elected leaders can do that but that ‘easily’ adjective preceding ‘honestly’ is no longer there and the ‘statesmen’ noun has also long ago departed.  It has now become hard for me to believe that these politicians are capable of even having reasonable discourse let alone be capable of arriving at a reasonable agreement.  It seems to be becoming harder and harder every day for me to maintain any kind of faith in these so-called leaders and their ability to lead because they play endless politics.

As I was writing this blog I reflected upon how tired and sometimes confused I feel in dealing with what is happening in the world of politics and during that time, my mind wandered to and contemplated an article by Ezra Klein that I read in Vox.com.  The Article was dated 2/9/18 and entitled “Donald Trump, Fox News, and the logic of alternative facts.”  I highly recommend that you read this article.

Whether or not you decide to read Mr. Klein’s article, following is an excerpt from it that seems to perfectly describe what I was feeling and it helped me to understand why I might be feeling that way:

…What [Kellyanne] Conway and others understand is that if you’re just trying to activate your tribe, you don’t have to win the argument, you just need to have an argument; you need to give your side something to say, something to believe.  Something like the Nunes memo or the various out-of-context texts aren’t part of a search for truth – they’re an ammo drop, or, to go back to the way [Molly] Ball put it, “a semi-plausible (if not entirely coherent) counternarrative.”

Charlie Sykes, a conservative talk radio host turned Trump critic, put it well.  “The essence of propaganda is not necessarily to convince you of a certain set of facts.  It is to overwhelm your critical sensibilities.  It’s to make you doubt the existence of a knowable truth.  The conservative media is a giant fog machine designed to confuse and disorient people.”

There is no doubt that the Nunes memo and the various texts have thickened the fog.  If you were watching mainstream media outlets, you mostly saw the memo debunked, dismissed.  If you were watching Fox News, you saw Tucker Carlson saying, “For the first time in generations Americans have reason to believe that our intelligence and law enforcement agencies gravely misuse the powers we have given them.”  If you were watching Trump’s Twitter feed, you saw an all-caps alert of BOMBSHELL, alongside declarations of total victory:…

“Oh, what a tangled web we weave…”  What kind of a web are we weaving under the leadership of Mr. Trump and his administration and this Republican Congress?!  All of the lies and obfuscation, hubris and self-aggrandizement, and ‘alternative facts; where does it all end?!  Four years of Mr. Trump under these kind of circumstances would be enough to drive anyone batty.  And eight years?  I don’t think that there would be a sane person left in America; well, maybe the Trumpists would survive.  But surly they would also do something that Mr. Trump viewed as wrong somewhere along the way to displease him and he would turn on them too.  Then finally, the only sane person that would be left would be Mr. Trump himself.  American voters had better get busy and they had better do it soon!

So whether you are a Democrat, Republican, or Independent always remember, your vote is the most important one of all…unless you don’t use it!

American Voters, Keep Your Eyes On The Prize

Mr. Trump is extremely uninformed as a politician but, due in large part to his tenure on the TV program “The Apprentice”, he is very astute when it comes to manipulating the press and keeping the attention focused on him.  He does not care nearly as much about the fact that the vast majority of America and the world looks upon him as being a racist, narcissist and an ignorant politician as he cares about his ability to manipulate press coverage whether it is good or bad.  As long as he consumes all of the oxygen in the room and the focus remains on him he is relatively happy.

The same things applies to this blog – no matter the number of people that it reaches or how minor its impact might be, if the attention is focused on him and prevents it from being focused on those with a different perspective on any issue, which is not in line with how he views it and believes that it should be resolved, he is happy.  So from this point forward even if he is able to manipulate the press because it is incumbent upon them to cover him because he occupies the Oval Office, I will make a concerted effort to mention him either not at all or as little as is humanly possible and focus instead on ‘We the people’.  Having said that…

There are more distractions in the world of politics than we would care to think about right now but we must keep working and keep our eyes on the prize.  We must always focus on the fact that, as American citizens, we have a responsibility to ourselves and future generations, which are our children, our grandchildren, their children, and their children’s children.  All of these Americans, whom are comprised of those just mentioned in the previous sentence, and those whom they will directly or indirectly choose to become Americans in the future – right now – are in our hands.  It is easy to become weary or distracted for any number of reasons but as a result of our great love for America, we must resist this at all costs!  We must keep the dream alive!

We must always remember that ‘big money’ is not America, ‘surrogates – whether they go by the name of talking heads, mouthpieces or any other name – are not America, the congressional House is not America, the Senate is not America, nor is anything else America other than the American people as a whole.  ‘We the people’ are America and we must always remember that.  ‘We the people’ must realize that as America, we have a grave responsibility.  And that responsibility is to make sure that America remains America no matter how hard any other forces, whether they be internal or external, try to tear her down.  We owe this to ourselves and to our children, grandchildren, and to all of those who will follow them.

We need desperately to reform our election system.  That would be a good start to helping to continue to assure that every American’s vote will count.  And not only that, but it would begin to assure that a poor person’s vote will carry the same weight as that of a rich person, no matter how rich that person is.  Big money like, specifically speaking, the Koch brothers and all of those like them, should have their say and that say should carry their fair weight  in how the United States should function and handle its affairs, but their input should not carry any more weight than that of the everyday American citizen!  Their financial status should have nothing whatsoever to do with their vote!  Unfortunately right now, that is not the case because of the way that the system is set up; and when it was set up, it was skewed in favor of the rich because it was set up by them, and if those who set it up weren’t people like them, they were heavily influenced by people like them.

For instance, according to an article in the Associated Press dated January 29, 2018, the Koch brothers have announced that they will spend $400 million on the upcoming 2018 elections, which is more than that spent by the Republican National Committee, the National Rifle Association and the Chamber of Commerce combined in the 2016 cycle.  This provides them with an unfair advantage.  What average American citizen has that kind of money?!  And how many of them would it take to produce that kind of money?!  My question is why should the people who have that kind of money (the few) be able to dictate to those who do not have it (the many), which is the majority of Americans, how America will handle its affairs and which path forward she will take?  Many times polls have revealed that the majority of Americans have wanted to move in a particular direction but big money has won out and she moved in big money’s chosen direction instead.  How can this be right or fair?  It can’t be because it is intrinsically wrong!

My argument is not essentially that the weight of big money, of necessity, must carry the exact same weight of that of the everyday American because by default, there are fewer of them.  And that is where the needed reform comes in.  It must define the something that is needed to determine the weight of the say of the big money people compared to that of the everyday American.  In that election reform, we must work out something that is fair and just to every American and that is not just skewed in favor of those who – ironically, by virtue of the fact that this is America, were able to become ‘big money.’  It has been proven time and time again that American greed runs rampant.  On the surface, it appears that greed is what it takes to exist and survive in the murky waters of the big money crowd.

Even if that is the way that things are, as America, ‘We the people’ (as a whole), must act as the checks and balances on those who feel that, if they are to survive, they must do battle in the previously mentioned murky waters of big money and fight at all costs to win.  Until they show ‘We the people’ that to win at all costs does not include any and all collateral damage to the American people and to America’s reputation whether domestic and/or around the world, whenever necessary, we must interject those checks and balances.  And even if they do show us that it does not include these things, it is incumbent upon us as American citizens to always remain on guard.

The very fact that we are Americans dictates that we cannot view being an American as a zero sum situation where only a binary choice exist.  Our principles and the spirit and intent of our Constitution do not allow for that.  I do not have to lose in order for my fellow American to win!  In most cases, I do not have to chose one thing over another; I do not have to choose between Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) or Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIPS):  I choose both!  Why can’t I have both?!  It is not an impossible feat to give Americans both of these things without some kind of miracle and it is not impossible for politicians in Washington to solve many of the other problems that America is faced with; that is, if each would place real value in the oath that they swore to the Constitution when they were elected and would work to do the job that they were elected to do.  How much governance work has congress really done over the past few years, and especially this past year?

Ask yourselves that question, Honorables.  Then each of you should cut the crap, get busy, and do your job!

Republicans Trash The FBI For Trump

The Republican congress has chosen to trash the FBI rather than allow special counsel Robert Mueller to complete the Russia investigation unimpeded. They are determined not to risk the chance that he might find something that will prove, or even implicate, that Mr. Donald Trump was complicit with Russia in meddling in America’s 2016 election.  And it appears that they certainly do not want him to find that Mr. Trump actually colluded with the Russians and obstructed justice in his efforts to prevent or, at the very least, determine the outcome of the ensuing investigation.  It does not seem to matter to them that if he is found guilty of these things that he is unfit to occupy the Oval Office.  Virtually every Republican who ran for president in 2016 has already said that he was unfit.  They might not have called him treasonous but they called him almost every other derogatory name that they could think of at the time.

All of the dishonorable and underhanded things that these Republicans are accusing the FBI of doing, if they are not illegal, certainly border on being so. Not only do these accusations that are leveled against the FBI as a whole stain the long-held and hard-earned honor of the men and women who regularly risk their lives to keep the rest of us Americans safe, but they serve to discredit the FBI in the eyes of far too many Americans (even if it is only one) and countries around the world.  The sad thing is that they are doing this solely to protect a proven adamant liar who has worked harder to divide and weaken America than he has to pull us together and help us to maintain our current strength and, hopefully, grow even stronger.  Why is he doing this?  There is no doubt that we are stronger together: hopefully, Special Counsel Mueller’s investigation will provide us with the answer or if not, at least clues that will point us to the answer.

It is disconcerting to see America in so much chaos and just as disconcerting to see those elected officials in congress who are supposed to be our leaders and the protectors of the Constitution selling out, whether it is to personal ambition, party, Mr. Trump, all three or any combination thereof! Mr. Trump has indeed broken the mold.  I cannot recall any other president in my lifetime who has ignored presidential norms and traditions to the extent that Mr. Trump has.  So it naturally follows that I cannot recall a congress of either party that would so willingly follow a president down a rabbit hole if there was even the slightest chance that that president might be guilty of subversion of any type.  Either Mr. Trump has the charm and charisma of the very first snake in the apple tree or those congressional Republicans who are following and supporting him are just plain dumb.

No matter which it is, I hope that the Russia investigation will somehow be completed despite any obstruction that occurs; and I hope that it will be completed fairly and without bias. I also hope that American voters will hold all of those to account who for nefarious reasons worked to impede the investigation.  Whether they worked to support Mr. Trump through speaking on his behalf when they knew that he was lying, knowingly obfuscated the truth, hid evidence that would incriminate him, provided him with information so that he could prepare his lies in advance or lied themselves on his behalf, they should and must be held to account at the polls come November 2018 and 2020.  They must not be allowed to continue to help Mr. Trump move America backward, dismantle everything that America ever stood for, and strip her of all of her dignity and respect and the place of honor and high esteem that Americans have worked to earn in the eyes of all of those around the world.  They must not normalize him and empower him so that he can pull all of the rest of Americans down to his level.

If Mr. Trump’s only goal is to acquire and store up accolades  and always stand before an audience that adores him and showers him with affection then he should go back to reality television and all Americans should wish him good riddance.  They should do this because that is where those things that he is seeking can and should be found.  They should not be sought after in such an esteemed and serious office as that of the President of the United States of America because that is not where these things should be found.

Instead, the Oval Office is a place that demands a dedicated Commander-In-Chief who is dedicated to America and the American people and who is seeking to take the lead in continuing to nurture and grow something that has always been and still is bigger than any one person including their self. It is a place where that elected leader has accepted the responsibility of taking the entire weight of all of the American people – their dreams, their desires and aspirations – upon their shoulders.  The load is heavy, especially with America being a melting pot, and should not be taken on lightly and without long and serious consideration.

Most, if not all, of America’s past presidents recognized this grave responsibility, had seriously considered and prepared for it, and entered into this Office with an open mind, willingness to learn, and a determination to be all Americans president. That has not been the case with Mr. Trump.  He believes that he should be the Mr. Trump only to those who agree with him, admire him without reservation, and shower him with praise and adulation; and for the greatest part, that is his base.

So whether or not you agree with the direction in which Mr. Trump is leading America you should always get out and vote. If we all determine that that is what we are going to do and we step up to our responsibility as citizens and vote, then America will travel in the direction that the majority of Americans want her to travel…whether I agree with that direction or not.  Consequently, me and those Americans who might not agree with the majority can make our feelings known and the president with the best interest of America and its citizens in mind –  in the spirit and intent of fairness –  and with their great ability to sort through things, can use their great leadership skills combined with their determination to consider and empathize with all of the American people, to make a decision as to what should be done to effectively address the situation.

I realize that what was just said is more than a mouth full but I hope that you get my point. All of the things (and many more) mentioned in the preceding paragraph are necessary ingredients in the politics of the POTUS if they are to be successful while leading such a diverse group of citizens such as those that we have here in America.  Fortunately, Americans can change the direction that America is traveling in with their vote.  Things will never always go the way that everyone wants them to go and there will always be winners and losers.  But that is democracy!  So whether you are a Democrat, Republican or Independent, get out and vote.  And always remember, your vote is the most important one of all…unless you don’t use it!

Democrats Are In A Quandary Over How They Handled The Latest Republican Continuing Resolution Bill

Democrats have found themselves in a disconcerting situation as a result of how Senate Minority  Leader Chuck Schumer handled the recent situation that helped the Republican controlled senate to reopen the government.  Minority Leader Schumer, after conferring with a small number of Democratic senators, which included senators Susan Collins and Joe Manchin, decided to work with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to reopen the government without any real concessions from the Majority Leader.  This not only angered many progressive senators in the party but it angered many progressives overall.

I know that I was angry because I believed that the fact that senate Democrats had refused to support the Continuing Resolution (CR) unless it included a solution to the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) or at least a guarantee that this problem would be addressed immediately to avoid going beyond the March 5 deadline, which was arbitrarily imposed by Mr. Trump, had the support of the Democrats’ base and the majority of the American people.  And for Minority Leader Schumer to give up the fight for virtually no concessions from the other side made me wonder why he bothered to stand on the side of a shutdown in the first place.

Then I read Ezra Klein’s article in Vox.com dated 1/22/2018 entitled ‘Democrats didn’t cave on the shutdown’.  It calmed me down somewhat and allowed me to think more clearly.  I then read Pat Garofalo’s article in U.S. News & World Report also dated 1/22/2018, which was basically the counterpoint to that of Ezra Klein’s and it gave me a basis of comparison for Mr. Klein’s conclusion that the Democrats did not cave and my conclusion that Minority Leader Schumer (and therefore the Democrats) did cave.

After I read these articles, I was able to moderate my disgust with Senator Schumer and my ‘I told you so’ attitude toward him that I had expressed in a previous article that I posted to this site before he became Minority Leader.  I still am not sure that he is the person for the Minority Leader job and neither am I sure that I will believe that he is after I further consider the situation; even if his tactic proves to be successful.

The bottom line is that we Democrats are in a quandary that we absolutely must find a way to extricate ourselves from and remain intact as a cohesive party.  Obviously, if I am a reasonable example of how those angry Democratic senators and other progressives feel, it will take some work.  Because although I have been able to moderate my anger regarding this cave…or not, by the Minority Leader, the fiery anger that engulfed me may be out but the top of my head has not yet stopped smoldering and the smoke has not yet stopped rising.

Trump Credibility Zero. America’s Credibility Waning Steadily

Mr. Donald J. Trump’s credibility is already at zero and with him in charge of America, America’s credibility is waning steadily.  Although it has been publicized that Mr. Trump told 2,000 lies during his first year in office it is highly likely that he told countless more than that.  Our country is now embroiled in a shutdown and Mr. Trump is doing more to hurt any potential resolution than he is to help it.  Why?  Because he is an out of control liar who finds it hard to make decisions or honorable agreements and when he does manage to make any, he is subject to change his mind and reverse that decision as soon as the party that he made the agreement with walks out of the meeting.  And because he occupies the Oval Office and in essence is the personification of America’s word, he is pulling America down with him.

Should they choose to do so, the Republican controlled congress could put a stop to this progressive draining of America’s credibility or, at the very least, stem its flow until the problem can be corrected.  Instead, they have chosen to enable Mr. Trump and have done nothing to even try to help America retain its honor and credibility in the eyes of American citizens and the world.

Unfortunately, this credibility problem also has a direct impact on congress and its ability to function properly.  It is obvious that Mr. Trump is continuing to soil all of those whom he touches as far too many of them, apparently including Republican members of congress, have abandoned their sworn duties to the Constitution and now have sworn allegiance to Mr. Trump.  They have become his minions.  Surely they must know that no matter how hard they try to hide it that the truth will ultimately be revealed.  But they have not yet realized this and if they have, they are not letting that deter them.  Therein lies the problem.  There is no longer trust among members of congress so that makes it all but impossible for members to do their job and represent the people who elected them to office.

Since Mr. Trump was elected, Republicans have taken a hard right turn and they have promulgated their intentions to ignore the minority party if they will not agree with them on the Republicans’ agenda and act simply as a rubber stamp, and pass legislation that addresses the Republican agenda without the agreement or help of congressional Democrats.  The only major case so far where they have been successful in running roughshod over Democrats is there tax cut bill.  They managed to give corporations a gigantic tax cut on the backs of middle class and poor Americans and distribute the great majority of those proceeds to rich Americans, the majority of which went to the top one tenth of a percent.  After the tax cut became law, the Koch brothers made a $500,000 contribution to Speaker Paul Ryan, which was likely a reward for him working to assure that the bill was passed.

After Mr. Trump was elected, among other things, he rescinded the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program and set an arbitrary date of March 5, 2018 for congress to resolve the DACA problem.  Because congress had continually refused to address the issue and the March deadline is fast approaching, in order to address this problem before the deadline and prevent those in the DACA program from being haphazardly deported and possibly prevent the need for them to be deported at all, congressional Democrats asked that a solution for DACA be included in the latest continuing resolution (CR) to fund the government for the short term.

The Republicans refused this request and continued with their bullying tactics so Democrats refused to support the CR.  A number of Republicans refused to support it as well.  Now that the government shutdown has occurred, all the while that they are blaming Democrats for it, they are asking them to help them to reopen the government by promising them that they will give serious consideration to DACA by its deadline on March 5, 2018.  Promise?!  They have got to be kidding, right?!  There word has to be worth almost as much as a bucket of spit!

In order for America to get back on track and for congress to be able to properly do its job, trust and credibility must first be restored in congress and in the White House.  This cannot be done if the Republican controlled congress continues to refuse to confront Mr. Trump and hold him to account.  Congress is not a subordinate to Mr. Trump it is his equal and members must act accordingly and do their job.  Among the numerous allegations that have been leveled against Mr. Trump is one that says he is a racist.  Senator Lindsey Graham said that Mr. Trump is ‘definitely not a racist’ and cited seriously flawed rationale as to how he came to this conclusion.  It is extremely hard to believe that Mr. Trump is not a racist in light of his record before and since he was elected to office.

If a fruit grows on an apple tree, has an apple peel, the fruit beneath the peel looks and tastes like an apple then whether it is red, yellow, green or some other color, it is an apple.  Despite any other name that anyone else might call it and no matter how many times they call it by another name, it is still an apple.  Everything about Mr. Trump including his record says that he is a racist; therefore, he is a racist.  Democrats must continue to stand against Mr. Trump’s efforts to rid America of people of color for nefarious reasons and all Republicans should join them.  If they value the oath that they swore to the Constitution and are true statesmen, then they will do this.  Let’s just hope that they will do it sooner than later.

This is America; The Koch Brothers Have The Right To Pursue Their Agenda

This is America!  And although I disagree with almost everything that the Koch brothers stand for, I still firmly believe that they have the right to pursue their agenda.  They have the right to work to protect their business interests although it appears to be strongly opposed to most middle class Americans’ interests!  For some reason unknown to me and something that I cannot put my finger on, my gut tells me that they are not like Mr. Donald Trump.  Something tells me that they are not – among many other things, racist and white supremacists like Mr. Donald Trump is but they are decent Americans with a different point of view from my own as a middle class American.  My gut tells me that they simply want to protect their business interests and are, instead, primarily money grubbing capitalist (in this particular instance, this is meant neither to be perceived as a pejorative nor a compliment – a way in which it is not impossible that they might take it coming from someone whom they would likely label a staunch liberal – aimed at the Koch brothers) who simply believe that they can never have enough money.

I do not know whether or not it might also be because they believe that they must play by the same rules that all of the other money grubbing capitalists play by if they are to effectively compete (only God knows how many times that, right or wrong, I have loathe the Democrats for not playing by the same rules as their Republican colleagues in order to accomplish Democratic goals since Republicans seem to give no thought to screwing Democrats) or if it is because they are the lead dogs among those who are simply money hungry and a part of the infamous American greed.  Perhaps which reason it is does not matter to them but I believe that it deeply matters to the American people.  I know that it matters to me!  It matters because of who I really believe that we are as Americans!  It matters because of how I believe most patriotic Americans feel!

The Koch brothers obviously have a strong team in place throughout the country that is working to push their agenda forward and that team is obviously very successful.  But what they do not have on their team is ‘someone‘ who represents the opposition.  They do not have anyone on that team who is telling them how the other side feels, why they feel the way that they do and that what they and their team are doing is bull**** (whether they agree with that person or not, which they likely wouldn’t).  My gut tells me that the Koch brothers do not want to destroy the federal government and democracy as we now know it as does Mr. Trump and his minions in the Republican-led congress.  They do not appear to want to destroy the free press and our intelligence agencies and establish an authoritarian government as does Mr. Trump.

The Koch brothers do not need to include this aforementioned ‘someone‘ in their strategy sessions but they still need them on their team because they truly need to know and understand how the other side feels.  My gut tells me that they want to understand the other side’s perspective even though they are very likely not to agree with their rationale.  Notwithstanding, that input could still be a meaningful part of their overall rationale.   If I were that ‘someone‘ I would grit my teeth, put up with all of their bull****, and tell them exactly how the other side feels.  I would tell them that they could compromise, win the other side over to – at least- some part of their cause – and use it to their advantage to gain the advantage over their competing money grubbers and use that leverage to better the system.  And I would tell them that they could do all of this without hurting their cause.  It would be a win, win for them!

Foreign leaders are talking about how America is losing stature around the world and how China, Russia and other countries are filling that void.  I cannot say for sure which side of the ledger that the Koch brothers would come down on when it comes to Mr. Trump and Russia but I believe that it would be on the side of patriotism and, therefore, America.  That means that they would not side with Mr. Trump.  Russia has been and still is – for whatever reason, quite successful at using Mr. Trump as their puppet and manipulating him to their advantage.  Unfortunately, congress is continuing to enable Mr. Trump in order to further their own personal political ambitions, protect the Republican party, and further the Republican political agenda instead of putting America first and exercising their sworn responsibility to protect the constitution.

These congressmen, unfortunately, include elected officials like John McCain, Lindsey Graham, Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski.  These were senators who were recently touted as statesmen for standing up to their party in favor of supporting the will of the American people.  What a shame that they so quickly changed their tune under pressure from Senate Majority Leader Mitch (Whack-A-Mole) McConnell and voted for a tax bill loaded with partisan amendments unfavorable to Democrats and blue states and which also included an amendment that was specifically structured to destabilize Obamacare even though the majority of Americans had just rejected an attempt by Republicans to repeal Obamacare!

Congressional Republicans have been so completely blinded by their personal political ambitions and desire to protect Mr. Trump and the Republican party and its agenda that they have totally forgotten about the American people.  They have forgotten about who put them in office and why they were put there and instead have chosen to bow down to big money.  They have chosen their big money donors over the rest of the American people and their will.  Only the American people can correct this problem and we should do exactly that.  We should do it immediately!  We must show the billionaires and millionaires that they alone do not run this country but that the American people overall do.  They must be made to realize that billionaires and millionaires have a right to their vote but that their vote counts no more than that of the very poorest American.  All decent, patriotic Americans know that this is how it should be.

Let’s begin right now to put people into office who feel this way; people who will be decent and patriotic Americans who will put country first.  Obviously, those Republicans who are there now do not feel this way.  But I cannot over emphasize the fact that we, the American people can fix this.  We must stop selling ourselves short.  We must realize that we have been doing this for a long time now and are continuing to do it because people with money, rich and powerful people, have convinced us that in order to count – in order to be worth anything – we must have money!  That is not the case.

Instead, this is a myth that has been perpetuated over the years and for so long that far too many middle class and poor Americans have accepted it.  We must accept, realize and always emphasize that everyone’s vote is equal.  A rich person’s vote does not count any more than does that of the poorest person in America!  And that is what actually makes America great!  Do not let Mr. Trump mislead you, his vote carries no more weight than does yours!  Our vote is the quintessential equalizer no matter who we are or how rich or poor we are!  So always remember, whether you are a Democrat, Republican or independent; your vote is the most important one of all…unless you don’t use it!  Be sure that you use yours.  Do not stand by idly and be ripped off by Mr. Trump and the rich and powerful!  Always vote!
